**A reference consultation is a scheduled or extended research interaction between a patron and a librarian or trained staff member that provides in‑depth, individualized research support. Reference consultations go beyond brief or transactional assistance and typically involve complex questions, advanced search strategies, resource evaluation, and/or research skill development.
Consultations are usually provided:
- By appointment (in person, virtual)
- Or following a referral from walk‑in reference services
