Dr. Bryan’s lecture will be the winter 2012 Heberden Society Lecture, as well as the third in the Division of Medical Ethics Seminar Series, “Medical Ethics as Seen through the History of Medicine”.
Charles S. Bryan is Director of the Institute of Internal Medicine and Family Practice at Providence Hospitals, Columbia, South Carolina; and Heyward Gibbes Distinguished Professor of Internal Medicine Emeritus at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, where he served as chair of the Department of Medicine and director of the Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities. His extensive publications deal mainly with infectious diseases, medical history, and medical biography. His awards include the William Osler Medal of the American Association for the History of Medicine, the Theodore E. Woodward Award of the American Clinical and Climatological Association, the Lifetime Achievement Award of the American Osler Society, and the Nicholas E. Davies Memorial Scholar Award of the American College of Physicians, of which he is a Master. A 1967 graduate of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, he is a past president of the American Osler Society and continues to have an active clinical practice as an infectious diseases consultant.
The Heberden Society, which seeks to promote an interest in the history of medicine, was founded at the medical center in 1975. With funding from the Office of the Dean, the society sponsors a series of lectures during each academic year.
The Division of Medical Ethics Seminar Series is a CME activity.

Target Audience: Weill-Cornell physicians in medical ethics, other interested physicians and health care providers, and students.
Course Objectives: This CME activity is intended to lead to improved patient care and safety based upon an assessment of gaps in physician knowledge, competence and performance. By the conclusion of this series, physicians should learn new content relevant to their practice that informs and thereby improves the clinical care they provide.
CME Accreditation and Credit Designation Statement: Weill Cornell Medical College is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
