Kenneth M. Ludmerer, MD, is an internist, medical educator, and historian of medicine. He received an AB from Harvard College, and an MA and MD from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In 1978-79 he was Chief Resident in Internal Medicine at Barnes Hospital, and the following year he joined the faculty of Washington University.

Dr. Ludmerer is best known for his work in medical education and health care policy. His books include Genetics and American Society (1972), a study of the American eugenics movement, Learning to Heal (1985), on the creation of America's system of medical education, and Time to Heal (1999), an examination of the evolution of American medical education from the turn of the century to the present era of managed care. His latest book, Let Me Heal: The Opportunity to Preserve Excellence in American Medicine (2014), is the first-ever account of the residency system in the United States and its relation to the quality of patient care in the country.

Dr. Ludmerer has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Association of American Physicians, and the American Clinical and Climatological Association. He is a Master of the American College of Physicians and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Tosteson Award for Leadership in Medical Education of Harvard's Carl J. Shapiro Institute (2001).

The Heberden Society, which seeks to promote an interest in the history of medicine, was founded at the medical center in 1975. With funding from the Office of the Dean, the society sponsors a series of lectures during each academic year.
