The second Heberden Society Lecture of the 2010-2011 academic year will be delivered by Robert C. Abrams, M.D. at 5 p.m. on Thursday, January 27, 2011, in the Uris Faculty Room (A-126) of Weill Cornell Medical College at 1300 York Ave. The title of the lecture will be "Late Life Depression and the Death of Queen Victoria."
Dr. Abrams is Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College and Attending Psychiatrist at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
According to Dr. Abrams 2010 paper describing Queen Victoria's depression:
Although historians and biographers have long been aware of Queen Victoria's final depression, the emphasis has mostly been on her earlier and prolonged mourning for her husband Prince Albert. Re-examined now, the Queen's Journal suggests that a severe late-life depressive episode occurring approximately in her last 5 months contributed meaningfully to her death.
The Heberden Society, which seeks to promote an interest in the history of medicine, was founded at the medical center in 1975 and is named after Sir William Heberden the younger (1767-1845), who served as court physician to King George III of England. (King George III was the sovereign who granted the charter for The New York Hospital in 1771.) With financial assistance from the Office of the Dean, the society sponsors three lectures during each academic year.
