From the polar vortex, to Arctic blasts, to thundersnow, New York City weather has given most of us some meteorological firsts in the last few years. Though the study of such phenomena dates back to ancient India (circa 500 AD), the formation of weather observation networks that systematically collected weather data was not established until 1654 in Italy.

This weekend we had a small early storm that caused hectic in the metropolitan area. The image above shows the blizzard of 1947, a record breaking storm that hit New York on Christmas 1947 dropping 26.6 inches of snow. This scene of York Avenue was taken by Farrington Daniels, who became the chief of the Division of Dermatology at the medical center.
York Lodge located on Orienta Point, Long Island Sound was purchased by Bloomingdale Hospital (now Westchester Division) in 1922. Both patients and staff used the lodge until 1982.
I am currently processing the papers of Dr. Harry Gold, a former New York Hospital (now NewYork-Presbyterian) cardiologist and Cornell University Medical College (now Weill Cornell Medical College) faculty member. As a pioneer in the use of digitalis glycosides for the treatment of cardiac failure, Dr. Gold conducted numerous studies while working out of cardiac clinics at New York Hospital, Beth Israel Hospital, and the Hospital for Joint Diseases. Though we're officially a week away from the start of summer, 100 degree days suggest it's already here. While browsing the Archives' photo collection recently, I came across a remarkably appropriate image - a photograph of medical center students relaxing on a roof deck taken sometime during the 1970s according to the photo's record. Looks like my deck on a sunny afternoon!
In honor of the Class of 2011 graduation ceremonies, we've chosen to highlight a selection of photographs taken at past graduations now housed at the Medical Center Archives. Among the Archives' 13,000 digitized images are dozens of graduation shots. Enjoy!
